Nausea and Vomiting

A strong support network is helpful

Like other chemotherapies, DOXIL® may cause nausea and vomiting. Nausea and vomiting are usually mild and may be managed with medications. Tell your doctor or nurse if you experience either of these symptoms.

Management tips

Talk with your doctor or nurse about which of the tips below may be best for you. Check with them to see if there is anything else you should watch for.

  • Do
  • Avoid
  • If you still feel nauseous

Do

  • Take your time eating and drinking; chew your food well
  • Eat small meals frequently throughout the day instead of a few big meals
  • Drink liquids at least 1 hour before or after your meals instead of with them
  • Eat foods that are cold or at room temperature to avoid being bothered by strong smells
  • Eat dry foods like toast, crackers, or cereal before getting up if you feel nauseated in the morning (unless you have stomatitis)
  • Drink clear, cool liquids such as apple juice, iced tea, or ginger ale that has been allowed to lose its fizz
  • Suck on ice cubes or mints

Avoid

  • Fried, fatty, rich, greasy, and sweet foods
  • Smells that may bother you, like smells from cooking, perfume, or smoke
  • Lying down after eating; wait at least 2 hours
  • Wearing tight-fitting clothes
  • Try relaxation techniques, such as breathing slowly and deeply, meditating, or listening to relaxation CDs
  • Distract yourself by watching TV or movies, talking with friends or family, or listening to music
