Understanding Your Treatment Options
What is multiple myeloma?
Cancer that begins in plasma cells—a type of white blood cell—is called multiple myeloma. Most blood cells develop in the bone marrow, the soft material in the center of many bones.
Sometimes, despite treatment, multiple myeloma returns. Doctors describe two ways in which multiple myeloma returns:
- Relapsed multiple myeloma is disease that returns after initial treatment is completed
- Refractory multiple myeloma is disease that progresses while on treatment or within 60 days of the last treatment
DOXIL® treats both relapsed and refractory multiple myeloma
If you have been diagnosed with relapsed or refractory multiple myeloma, your doctor will thoroughly review your treatment options with you.
Depending on when your relapse occurred, your doctor may select among several appropriate combinations. You may receive the same treatment you received when you were first diagnosed, or your doctor may recommend a different combination of drugs—such as DOXIL® plus VELCADE® (bortezomib).
